A CATALOGUE OF ROMANIAN TRAVELLERS CHEQUES (1947-1989)

After the creation of the Popular Republic of Romania (december 1947), the new communist regime started to impose restrictions on the use of foreign currencies by romanians, and also the use of romanian money (lei) by foreigners.

So, the basic system goes like this:

- if you are a foreigner visiting Romania, you have to buy romanian travellers cheques for use inside the countries (or bring your own nations travellers cheques)

- if you are a romanian visiting a  foreign country, you have to buy romanian travellers cheques for use abroad (or buy travellers cheques from that country, if possible).

Until 1989, several issues were produced. Basic, there are three different models. Two were ment to be used by foreigners in Romania and one was used by romanians going abroad. Several signatures are known (until now, 8, but other might exist) and some varieties.

This catalogue is dedicated to collectors, dealers. It will be made a book when sufficient material will be known. Readers with unknown varieties or just plain pieces in collection are invited to send scans (jpeg, 300 dpi) for the improvement of this catalogue. Adress:
